Urban design for the former industrial site Kortrijk Weide.
Kortrijk Weide
Kortrijk
The former industrial site 'Kortrijk Weide', situated west of the city centre, houses among other things a disused goods station. The site, characterised by its scale and 'emptiness', will—through the redevelopment of the small ring road around Kortrijk, whose western route is being redrawn and becomes one of the site's boundaries—combine the potential of a peripheral location with a setting within walking distance of the city centre. Kortrijk-Weide will become a programmatic and typological outlet for the city, within which the landscape quality is preserved. The working instruments are the building programme, the infrastructure/access, industrial 'remnants' and the landscape layout.
The limited initial programme is strategically positioned so as to define places that acquire an identity without housing a specific programme. At the same time, the placement of the various volumes, parking areas and open spaces generates different routes across the site and encourages use of the entire site from the outset. The infrastructure connecting these places guarantees potential for the development of the remaining locations.
